The seasonality of business growth and getting it right

Every May Day, Oxford comes alive a little earlier than usual.

Choirs sing from Magdalen Tower at sunrise, Morris dancers appear in the streets, and thousands of people gather to welcome in a new season.

And after running Better People Ltd and supporting entrepreneurs, business owners and growing businesses with recruitment since 2008, I’ve realised business growth has a seasonality too.

Spring and early summer are often when business owners start thinking:

  • “We need more people.”
  • “We’ve outgrown our current structure.”
  • “How do we find people who match our values and really fit”
  • “We need someone stronger in this role.”
  • “Why does recruitment suddenly feel harder than it used to?”
  • “What is there in the new employment legislation that we need to worry about now?”
Most of my clients are within an hour of Oxford, and interestingly, many of the conversations I’m having right now are not just about growth — they’re about getting growth right.

Because growth without the right people? That gets expensive quickly!

The businesses that build the strongest teams are rarely the ones hiring the fastest. They’re the ones hiring intentionally. They take time to:

  • Properly define the role
  • Think about culture fit
  • Understand what success looks like
  • Have a clear post hire management plan
  • Recruit people who will grow with the business
  • That’s where I come in.
At Better People, recruitment has never just been about sending CVs.

It’s about helping businesses make confident hiring decisions, reduce risk, and build teams that genuinely work well together.

Alongside finding the very best people for my clients’ vacancies, I also help businesses through:

  • 121 Recruitment Training – The Recruitment Blueprint
  • Recruitment Planning Sessions
  • Talent Dynamics profiling to improve team performance and communication
  • Recruiting the best people shouldn’t feel like guesswork or a lucky dip – it should feel natural, well-planned and intentional.

So, if your business is entering a new season of growth this spring and you’d like a conversation about your hiring plans, feel free to get in touch.

And if you were up early enough to enjoy Oxford May Day celebrations this year — I hope the coffee afterwards was strong ☕🌿
